Throughout my life I have dealt with erasure and lack of acceptance of my identity, from my grandparents wondering when I'll get a girlfriend (which is extremely heteronormative in itself, but that's another post) to being asked by the cashier at Chipotle if I and my friend are "together." But today I experienced perhaps the most heinous, cutting and identity demolishing microaggression yet. I was heading to class through my university's student union, when "volunteers" (probably funded by the alt-right fash) offered me a c*nd*m for "safe sex." The worst part? I was so overcome with fear and emotion that I rejected my own identity and took it. I knew I would be putting myself, my fellow asexuals, and our allies in danger by declaring who I am and just rejecting it. But today that stops. I am not going to live in fear of another anti-ace hate crime. I am not going to contribute to the culture of silence that isolates and invalidates our identities. I am ace & I AM PROUD.
