What do you do for a living?

Recommended Posts

Title kind of says it all, i'm just curious what everyone does for a living :)

Occupation: Electrical engineering apprentice

i finish my apprenticeship in a few weeks, I'm currently employed for a HVAC & BMS (Building managements systems) company.

i basically build these sort of things VW3Fh9y.jpg.

I absolutely love it, don't get me wrong its stressful and a hell of lot of deadlines, but i'm always learning and slowly getting better.

So yeah, What do you do for a living?

Working at a shoe shop currently (Clarks) as a jack of all trades, mainly working in the back with stock.

Looking into trade apprenticeships, not 100% sure what to go for, ideally something that doesn't involve a lot of travelling.

I know that's where the big bucks is generally at but still, fuck hotels and fuck driving long distances.

How's electrical engineering?

No doubt more technical than being a sparky.

The distance thing is alright for me if i tag along for a call out, joys of being an apprentice is i only have to assist for now, it's alright as i sort of pitch in where i can for the time being, i am signed up to learn how to do some forms of programming on some of the controllers we use so its taking a different turn for me which will be interesting.

More technical than a sparky, but still a hard days graft. Although sparkys kind of just get pointed at what to do and don't generally think twice about what they are doing. but i respect them all the same :P "most" work hard for their money.

Most trade jobs will include travelling though, maybe find an apprenticeship that only does local jobs? Minimal traveling?

If you want 0% traveling then it's either retail or an office job.

I kinda miss retail. Actually what i guess i mean is i miss the one shop i liked. Everyone was happy, the workload was moderate and the customers were lovely.

I'm currently an apprentice IT Engineer but i'll be fully fledged in May.

I support primary schools as north as Leeds and as south as Derby.

The company has clients nationally. Not only schools.

Schools are pretty easy going. A couple have some more specialist setups but most are run-of-the-mill.

Working around kids is hilarious and i can understand why people go into teaching primary. You get all the shit in secondary/high school, but in primary schools all the kids are too nice to be arseholes. In my schools, im a bone-fide wizard.

Every month or so everyone bings their rigs into the office on the last Friday and we have a LAN. Blackjack, Oculus Rift, sometimes a bit of retro too.

It's a great job, but i was far more comfortable in my little corner shop.

Was a personal lines insurance underwriter, wherein I set terms and price upon personal lines insurances (read: the shit you and your family pay for).

But new job starting end of the month is cross-lines specialism underwriting, where I underwrite commercial insurance and liability insurance.

Same as first job, but with bigger and more complex risk, plus more technical knowledge needed and greater judgement required.

I also deal drugs outside of working hours for extra cash

Welcome to the club.

I use my parents for a living while I study in university (Computer science) so I'm not a complete pariah. And of course, when I get a job after finishing my degree I will try to return my parents the favour : )

Joking, I don't deal, did it once, never again, can't stand the pressure lol

I'm a placement software developer at union square software. Recently I've been offered summer employment and graduate employment at my current company. I will be taking them up on it however I'm unsure how long I'll stay as a graduate because I really want to go into the games industry.

I'm currently working on a history degree at the university of plymouth (so not exactly making a living)

I will be spending some time at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London on placement. Depending how that goes I'll look into carrying on, or perhaps working at the Sydney one when I return there after I graduate.
