έμπορος - A Greek Trading Game

Recommended Posts

Welcome to έμπορος (I too, have no idea how the hell you pronounce this), a game where each player is a trader in the ancient Grecian Empire. This is a slightly more indepth game than my previous (as if something could be simpler) and so if you don't understand something, you are more than allowed to either PM me the question or make it a reply to this thread (preferable, unless it is private, as other people may also have that same query).

The Goal: The goal of this game is to earn as much money as possible. This can be done by trading with the Delian provinces, with Athens itself or with other players in the game. There is no set end time to this game (as reaching the end is a formiddable task) and new players will be able to join at any point.

Turns: The game consists of turns that last for one week, both in game and real life and each turn ends at midnight, each Sunday. The turns themselves are split up into two phases, phase one and phase two.

  • Phase One: Buy goods with your money and trade goods and money with other players.
  • Phase Two: Sell your goods for money and do other things that cost resources.

Although you can decide when your phases end, they have to be in order. So phase one will always occur before phase two.

Start of the Game: When you sign up for the game, you have to choose one of the 11 provinces below. You start with a trade office in Athens, and a trade office in the province of your choice. It has to be a province that has the least number of offices (which can be found at the bottom of the page). You also start with 10,000 coins. To enter, you can type join .

Possible Actions: You can take a number of possible actions in the game, these are listed below. All actions MUST be posted in bold, anything not in bold will not be read and instead counted as discussion with others. There is no limit to the number of actions you can take.

Phase 1 Actions:

  • Buy from : This action will buy from a province in which you have an office. E.G. Buy 2 grain from Aegina.
  • Trade for with : This action will start a trade offer to another player. E.G. Trade 1 timber for 85 coins with Popey.
  • Accept trade with : Accept a trade offer from another player.
  • Refuse trade with : Refuse a trade offer from another player.
  • Cancel trade with : Cancels your own trade to another player.
  • Lend to for % interest over weeks: This allows you to loan money to other individuals in exchange for interest. E.G. Lend 10,000 coins to Popey for 5% interest over 4 weeks.
  • Accept loan from : Accept a loan another player has offered.

Phase 2 Actions:

  • Sell to : This action will sell to a province in which you have an office. E.G. Sell 2 grain to Aegina.
  • Build office in : Builds a level one office in the province of your choice. This can be later upgraded. The current cost to build a new office is 15,000 coins.
  • Upgrade office in : Upgrades an office in a province of your choice. Upgraded provinces are better protected from Gods and have a higher capacity, however they cost more to maintain. Costs and benefits are in a table below.
  • Offer to : Occasionally, the Gods can help you in various ways (known as myth powers). You need to offer goods to their temples however to gain access to them. The resources necessary to gain this buff and the prize from doing so will change from week to week. Myth powers will take place immediately.

Misc Actions:

  • Dump - Remove goods from your stock.

Value of Goods:

Each goods item may be bought from the province, as well as Athens. Note that although the price in these tables are static, they may change depending on the myth powers that are currently in action.

Capacity:

Capacity is dependant on the amount of offices you have and what levels each of those offices are at. At no point in the game are you allowed to have more goods than your capacity limit. Note, to simplify this game, each item in the game has no location constraint and that all capacity constraints at the same. This means that all your capacity gets summed to get your maximum capacity. It has the side effect of allowing you to buy 40 grain in Aegina and sell 40 grain in Athens even if each of those offices individually have only a capacity of 20.

Upgrading Offices:

Offices can be upgraded in order to increase your maximum capacity. Each office starts at level one and can be upgraded by paying the required goods during a phase two turn (see table for prices). Upgraded offices not only provide increase capacity but they can also protect you from unpleasant side effects from Gods. Note that maintenace costs also increase when offices are upgraded.

Level | Cost to upgrade from previous lvl | Capacity | Maintenance
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 | Cost to build: 15000 coins | 10 | 1 grain/week
2 | 2 timber 2 bricks | 12 | 1 grain/week
3 | 5 timber 5 bricks | 14 | 1 grain/week
4 | 5 timber 5 bricks 2 iron | 16 | 1 grain/week

10 | 15 timber 15 bricks 10 iron 2 marble 1 pottery | 28 | 4 grain/week
11 | 15 timber 15 bricks 10 iron 4 marble 2 pottery | 30 | 5 grain/week
12 | 15 timber 15 bricks 15 iron 4 marble 2 pottery | 32 | 7 grain/week
13 | 20 timber 15 bricks 15 iron 4 marble 2 pottery 1 slaves | 34 | 10 grain/week
14 | 20 timber 15 bricks 15 iron 4 marble 2 pottery 5 slaves | 36 | 14 grain/week
15 | 20 timber 20 bricks 20 iron 5 marble 5 pottery 10 slaves | 38 | 20 grain/week
(allows a second office)

Myth Powers:

Although disabled at the start of the game (until it has progressed to at least turn two), when the game is running there will be a mechanic of myth powers. There are 5 Greek Gods which you can offer valuable goods in exchange for their chosen power of the week. Offered goods are permanent, which means that they stay offered to the God of your choice throughout the entire game (allowing you to pay for a further power with previous offerings). Note that this makes it far more worthwhile to focus on a single God rather than multiple.

There are no myth powers at the moment.

Credit goes to Lawrencelot, a guy who went on the previous forums I frequented for coming up with the structure.

It may have helped if you explained a little more on how to start, what you start with (money), etc. I'd be interested to join if I knew how :)

EDIT: Haha, sorry Popey, should've read the thread more clearly. Just a few more question though, is the maintenance used up at the end of each week or the start of each week? If you don't pay maintenance, what happens? Does the interest for loans happen every week, can loans be payed back before the time or is it the exact time it must be payed back? Finally, if somebody accepts your trade does that come in to effect in the second phase or can you trade items to another player for money, buy more items and then sell them again to the player all in the same phase?

I read it all, and it actually looks pretty awesome, but I don't know if I will understand it well, so I'll wait a couple of days, see how people play and then join, probably haha. But very nice thread Popey!

The general syntax to join is to:

join

Although, considering everything is handled by me, just type a general syntax that seems readable and I'll be able to convert it :3. Note the general setup when you start the game is mentioned in the thread:

Start of the Game: When you sign up for the game, you have to choose one of the 11 provinces below. You start with a trade office in Athens, and a trade office in the province of your choice. It has to be a province that has the least number of offices (which can be found at the bottom of the page). You also start with 10,000 coins. To enter, you can type join .

To be honest, I put in a lot more thought intp what I was buying than was completely necessary. I also write out quite a lot more than I needed to, to make everything more understandable and to make it easier to find any of my mistakes. Keep in mind what I wrote covers my turn for a week, yes it may seem complicated but there is definitely potential for some fun to be had, and I think it fits decently enough on the forums where all the information is written down and easy to access.

If you feel like the game is too complex for you, you do realise you can not play it? It's a free country after all. Skiller, a preliminary look shows that all you've done seems right :). The reason you need grain for maintenance is that your workers eat food! (Unless you want to make them starve...)

Haha, sorry Popey, should've read the thread more clearly.

Maintenance is used up at the end of each week.

If you fail to pay maintenance, the level of your office is decreased by one. If it is already lvl 1, you lose it.

Interest for loans is going to be simplified. So, for example, 1,000 to be paid back over 4 weeks with 5% interested. 5% will be added to 1000 (1050) and then divided by the payment period (263 (rounded up)). This price will then be taken from the user at the end of each week.

If you're selling in your trade, it's counted as a phase two action. If you're buying in your trade, it's counted as a phase one action.
