I'd rather leave your opinion, this allows the community to socialise and share interesting comments with each other. Why does it need to have a purpose? It doesn't harm anyone, if you don't want to open it, just mark it read and leave it be. The only reason I can see anyone having a problem with this is if they're concerned over people gaining post count, which quite frankly, I can't believe is still going on.
