Alan came from a BBC show where they filmed animals, then dubbed human voices onto them.

Meerkats pop up and say ALAN? - then another pops up and says STEVE?

Then i started saying it on the CS:S server, theory was that if i said it enough, people would just pick it up.

It's also used alot in music festivals, everyone yells alan, someone else replies steve. (Glastonbury)
